Every August, thousands of children across the South Side prepare for a new school year filled with possibility. They dream about fresh notebooks, new classes, and the excitement of seeing old friends. But for many families in our service area, the weeks before the first day of school are filled with stress, uncertainty, and financial strain.
At Chicago Family Health Center, we see these realities every day. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, our mission is to promote health by delivering high quality, accessible primary healthcare that is culturally sensitive, affordable, and responsive to community and individual needs. We serve families who face systemic barriers including low income, limited transportation, unstable housing, food insecurity, and high rates of chronic disease. These challenges affect a child’s ability to stay healthy and succeed in school long before the first bell rings.
The Back-to-School Health Fair was created to remove these barriers. For one day, children receive everything they need to start the school year strong. They get physicals, vaccines, dental screenings, backpacks filled with supplies, free haircuts, hygiene kits, healthy snacks, and the priceless joy of being celebrated by their community. Parents meet CFHC staff who welcome them with respect, compassion, and support they can count on long after the event ends.
