Well-Child Care

Well-child care is the best way to keep your children healthy. As kids grow and develop, parents and caregivers should stay current with their well-child doctor visits, which consist of physical measurements, patient history, sensory screenings, behavioral assessments, immunizations, and other tests and lab work.

Developmental screenings

Children between six months and three years of age receive regular developmental screenings during well-child visits. Screenings are done using a questionnaire that helps determine if your child’s development is on target for their age.

Physicals

Keeping your child active and engaged in school and sports is essential for their overall well-being. Our pediatric team provides thorough school and sports physicals to ensure your child is healthy, ready to participate, and meets all required guidelines.

School Physicals

Many schools require annual physicals to ensure children are meeting developmental milestones and are up to date on vaccinations. During a school physical, our providers will:

  • Review medical history and growth progress
  • Perform a full physical exam to check overall health
  • Ensure required immunizations are up to date
  • Address any health concerns that may impact learning and development

Note: CFHC provides these exams to current patients. Children who are not CFHC patients can make a new patient appointment and parents/guardians must bring children’s vaccination records to the first  visit.

Sports Physicals

If your child participates in organized sports, a pre-participation physical exam (PPE) is often required. This exam helps prevent potential injuries and ensures your child can safely engage in physical activity. During a sports physical, we will:

  • Assess heart and lung function
  • Check joint flexibility, muscle strength, and posture
  • Evaluate any past injuries or medical conditions
  • Provide recommendations to prevent sports-related injuries

Lead poisoning care & prevention

Our doctors and staff talk with you about how to keep your children safe from lead poisoning and test kids to see if they have been affected. If children have lead poisoning, we will offer treatment and teach you how to manage their conditions, depending on the environment and where you live. Our providers and staff will help you manage blood lead tests and provide the right follow-up care.

Bright Smiles Start Early: Our Pediatric Dental Program

A healthy smile begins in childhood! We recommend starting oral care as early as six months old to build strong dental habits for life. Our gentle, kid-friendly dentists provide fluoride varnish treatments for children ages six months to three years, helping protect tiny teeth and promote lifelong oral health.

To make dental care easy and stress-free, we encourage scheduling pediatric dental visits alongside well-child checkups or other primary care appointments. Plus, routine dental care is fully covered for all children under Medicaid, ensuring access to essential oral health services.

A bright, healthy smile supports success in school! Our school dental exams include:

  • Checkups for cavities
  • Protective dental sealants
  • Preventive and restorative care

Important Reminder: Illinois requires proof of a dental exam for school children. If not submitted by May 15, report cards may be withheld. Since requirements may change, we recommend checking with your child’s school to stay up to date on exam and immunization guidelines.

Early identification is key to supporting a child’s mental health

We offer behavioral health screenings and comprehensive mental health assessments to understand each child’s unique needs.

Behavioral Support

School-age children often face behavioral and emotional challenges that impact their academic and social success. We work with families to support positive behavioral changes, improve social skills, and address concerns like impulsivity, defiance, and difficulty focusing.

  • Depression: Supporting children who experience sadness, hopelessness, or withdrawal from daily activities.
  • Anxiety: Helping children manage worry, fear, and stress through therapy and coping techniques.

Collaborative Care for Chronic Conditions

Mental health plays a significant role in managing chronic illnesses. Our behavioral health specialists collaborate with medical and dental providers to support children with conditions like asthma, diabetes, and oral health concerns that may impact their emotional well-being.

We’re dedicated to creating a healthier future for children in our community. Our specially designed programs support their physical, emotional, and developmental well-being, helping them grow into happy, healthy, and thriving individuals.
